Visit Planned from COSEE China - 07.28.2011

Wei Vera Shi
Vera Shi, COSEE China, visits the northeast COSEE centers.

Wei "Vera" Shi from Xiamen University in Xiamen, China is visiting the United States for the month of August and will meet with several of the COSEE centers in the northeast. The focus of Vera's visit is to gain firsthand experience of how different COSEE centers work, become familiar with marine science education in the US, and to learn more about developing education/outreach programs.

In March 2010, Vera became interested in the COSEE Program during the COSEE-China Planning Workshop (http://www.cosee.net/about/coseechina/) in Beijing, where she met delegates from various COSEE centers. She now works partime for the COSEE-China Office (http://www.cosee-china.com/English/Default.aspx) which was initiated in 2010 and directed by Drs. Minhan Dai, Wenqing Cao and Min Liu (minliuxm@xmu.edu.cn).

Vera is also the Secretary for the State Key Laboratory of Marine Environmental Science (MEL), Xiamen University (http://mel.xmu.edu.cn/englishweb/index.asp). At MEL she is responsible for international exchange programs (both institutional and individual) and organizing conferences, workshops, and seminars. She also coordinates outreach programs like the joint program with Swire Taikoo (Xiamen) Aircraft Engineering Co. Ltd to increase public awareness of the ocean and environment.

During her trip to the US, Vera is hosted by Dr. Fei Chai at the University of Maine. She will visit COSEE-OS, COSEE OCEAN, COSEE-TEK, the School of Marine Sciences at the University of Maine, and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.
