COSEE OCEAN at ASLO - 02.24.2011

COSEE OCEAN sponsored two workshops at the recent meeting of the American Society of Limnology and Oceanography in Puerto Rico.
On Sunday February 13 COSEE OCEAN presented "Using Network Science for Better Collaboration"

Ocean science has become a highly collaborative enterprise. Advances in the science of networks, both social and computer, now allow a greater understanding and visualization of networks and how they can be used to accomplish ocean research and education goals. This workshop introduced network science and the applications of social network analysis (SNA) to academic and scientific endeavors. Dr. Karen Stephenson, President of Netform International and consultant to Malcolm Gladwell, author of The Tipping Point, presented some network science basics and applications of SNA to academic and business settings. Participants had the opportunity to work in small groups to discuss how this new knowledge may impact their proposals, research projects, or career trajectories.

On Monday, February 15, COSEE OCEAN and Dr. Stephenson presented this material during a lunchtime meeting of the ASLO Multicultural Program.
