COSEE OCEAN and Network Science - 10.20.2010
COSEE Ocean Communities in Education And social Networks (OCEAN) will be using and building networks as we develop our Center programs and activities. One of our first tasks is to learn all we can about how networks work. We thought we might bring the COSEE Network along as we learn.
As a first step in learning about networks, COSEE OCEAN team member Steve Uzzo, Vice-President for Science and Technology at the New York Hall of Science, presented an Introduction to Network Science to the entire COSEE OCEAN team. His presentation covered:
- the basics of networks - how they are complex, their dynamics, their connection to living things
- how networks are represented graphically
- features of networks - simple or complex, random or regular, network motifs
- network science disciplines:
- bioinformatics/systems biology
- genomics/proteomics
- biophysics
- sociology
- information theory
- biomedicine
- example of an application using NSF data to map the network of co-PIs in NSF ISE projects
- ways to use the results of the study, connecting isolated nodes with highly connected nodes
- How might COSEE benefit from Network Science?
- develop large scale database to determine connections based on needs
- graph results and analyze
- focus resources on such areas
